Pennsylvania's PIAA Wrestling Individual Championships were first held in 1938 at the Penn State main campus Rec Hall. The Championships were a 1 class system until 1974 when a dual class system was introduced with the class designations A and B. In 1976, the AA and AAA class system was introduced which is still in use today.
Over the years, Lancaster and Lebanon County schools have been a large part of the PIAA Wrestling Championships. The Lancaster-Lebanon League crowned its first PIAA State Champion, Robert Miller of J.P. McCaskey in 1954. In all, the Lancaster-Lebanon League has captured a total of 27 PIAA State Wrestling Champion titles and counting.
Although the majority of the Championships have been held at Penn State's Rec Hall and then later in the Harrisburg/Hershey area at the Farm Show Complex, the Hershey Arena and most recently at the Giant Center, there have only been two high schools to ever host the event. One of those two was J.P. McCaskey High School. In 1949, J.P. McCaskey High School hosted the PIAA Wrestling Championships in their Lancaster gymnasium.
The LL League is also host to the second oldest wrestling program in the state of Pennsylvania, Manheim Central which took to the mat in the 1926-1927 season. And although Solanco has had the most recent success at the state level, Manheim Central has crowned a total of 8 Pennsylvania State Wrestling Champions in its storied history.
